A subject very close to my heart.
While I may not necessarily agree with everything he says in this video, the sentiment is clearly one shared by millions around the world. The video has been live for less than 2 weeks but has already garnered nearly 25 million views on YouTube alone.
"Disconnect from the need to be heard and defined.
Go out into the world, leave distractions behind"
Of course it's ironic. Blogging about a spoken word piece pointing out the overuse of social media as it goes super mega viral on the exact platforms it's dissing... but this is the modern paradox I have written about many times on my blog.
How do we stay connected to the world, while remaining present as people (and parents)?
As usual, there are no clear answers.
Obviously, everyone has to make their own decisions about the appropriate amount of screen time, quality of content and the technology their family consumes.
Whether it's Peppa Pig for a 2 year old or Facebook for your teenager, you are not alone. These are daily battles being fought in homes around the planet, and as the video points out, inside each of us too.
Like any habit, the most important thing is to simply be aware of it.
We all remember our parents telling us not to smoke or swear, then hearing them mutter naughty words under their breath or light one up just five minutes later.
It's with those strong memories of hypocrisy in mind that I am renewing a commitment I have made to myself many times... Put the phone down. Don't let it come between you and your family.
Time for a quiet walk, I think.
